The dryer is one of the most convenient pieces of machinery in our homes. We don’t have to wait for a nice day to dry clothes on the line, and in less than an hour, we can have completely clean clothing! However, your dryer can also be one of the most troublesome if not properly cared for.
Dryer exhaust systems need to be cleaned regularly to prevent built-up dust, lint and grease, which can increase electrical costs, lead to health problems or even cause a fire.
How do you know it’s time to clean your dryer exhaust? Here are five warning signs:
- It takes longer to dry clothing
If the dryer isn’t working like it used to, that’s a sign that it’s time to have the exhaust cleaned. A clogged dryer vent can drastically increase the time that it’ll take to dry clothing, which can increase electricity costs as well as present fire hazards.
- The machine is hot to the touch
This is a sign the dryer is working too hard. If the dryer or your clothing is too hot to touch, it means the machine is not venting exhaust properly. This can cause the dryer to wear out faster.
- A closed vent hood flap
Here’s a visual sign: If your vent hood flap doesn’t open properly, air flow is being restricted, which means the dryer isn’t venting properly.
It’s also a warning sign if debris appear outside the vent opening. This means that debris can’t get out through the typical exhaust channels.
- A funny smell
Do you smell something burning? Or maybe a mildew or musty smell? Any weird scent means something isn’t going right inside your dryer.
- You can’t remember the last time you cleaned it
Dryer exhaust vents should be cleaned annually or on a regular basis. If you can’t remember the last time you had yours cleaned, now is the time.
