Avoid the Broken HVAC Headache
So you’ve decided to move forward with remodeling your home? How exciting! I’m sure there are plenty of things running through your mind as you prepare to tackle all of your tasks, like hiring contractors, buying supplies, and managing a project list. But before you’re knee-deep in paint, make sure to keep one very important thing in mind when approaching your remodel: Your HVAC system.
The Importance of a Good HVAC System
That’s right, your HVAC system is something you should consider when remodeling your home. Think about it: you’re probably giving the whole house an upgrade. Maybe new paint on the walls, new cabinets and countertops, new floors, new windows, new appliances, etc? Your house is getting a facelift and that is so exciting. But it’s only going to be exciting until you wake up one morning in your newly remodeled home, and realize that your heat or air is out.
The mere thought of it makes me sick to my stomach. How thrilled are you going to be about your home remodel when you realize you now have to dive into your savings account to desperately fix your old and outdated HVAC system? So before you get started on that to-do list, add your HVAC system to it too.
Now, assuming that you listened to me and HVAC is now in bright red marker at the top of your list, I’m sure you’re wondering what exactly you need to have done to it? We’ll dive into that below.
HVAC Repair vs. HVAC Replacement
First things first, you need to determine whether you just need HVAC repairs or an entire HVAC replacement.
An HVAC repair can be anything from duct cleaning to the replacement of a few parts. To determine if your HVAC system is in need of repairs, it is a good idea to find a specialist near you to come out and take a look at the system.
Before you get ahead of yourself, though, and say that your system is running fine, remember this: so is your 10 year old dishwasher. Yet you’re potentially replacing it in the kitchen remodel. Why? Because it’s old and bound to breakdown sooner or later. Maybe it’s already at the point where the dry cycle isn’t really “drying” your dishes anymore or it’s making clunky noises when it hits the wash cycle. It still works, but it’s nearing the end of its days. Same concept applies to your HVAC system.
You may think that everything is running fine, but your ducts may be clogged and in need of deep cleaning. Or perhaps your furnace has a defective part that is affecting your heating bill. One inspection and you may find out that your heating bill is about $50 more than it needs to be because of some issue you didn’t know existed.
Or, a thought to get your mind turning: maybe the windows you’re thinking of replacing are actually fine. You just think they need replaced because your heating/cooling bill is out the roof. Have your HVAC system inspected before you pay for all new windows. You may be surprised to find out that the system is the problem.
HVAC repair cost
HVAC repair costs can vary, depending on what is done. However, be prepared to spend anywhere from a few hundred dollars to a few thousand dollars. A good rule of thumb, though, is to keep prices in check. If it’s going to be thousands and thousands of dollars to repair something, then you may want to consider replacement instead. Replacing part or all of an HVAC system can be somewhat expensive but when you think about all that goes into it, the money makes sense, especially if it’s the culprit for many of the issues you’re planning to address on your remodel to-do list.
When an HVAC professional arrives to do a replacement, not only are they going to replace the unit in question (this could be the heating unit or the cooling unit, or both), they’re also going to run tests to make sure the entire system is working as a whole. That means they’re also going to inspect all of the other components of the system too. In other words, the whole system is getting a deep clean and its own “fresh coat of paint” from top to bottom.
HVAC replacement cost
The price to replace your old HVAC system with a new one can vary depending on the size of your home, so it’s incredibly important that you do your research and ask several professionals for quotes before agreeing to any work.
Which Method is Better?
This is definitely a trick question, because no one can really answer that for you but you. If your system is relatively new and there are only a few things that need repairs, then go with a repair. If it’s getting up there in age and in cost, you might want to just get it over with and make the replacement sooner rather than later. Either way, it is up to you and what you need. Do plenty of research and if you want more information on both of these options, this post goes into more depth to help you make the right decision for your home.
